In this article, we hope to describe adequately what social media is, how it works, and why it is highly effective for businesses to take advantage of so that a newcomer to the world of social media will walk away with a concrete understanding of the concept.
What is Social Media?
Social Media is something that has been around since the late 1990s and early 2000s. Originally, social media was an online platform through which friends, classmates, and teammates could connect with each other and keep up with the lives of each other.
It has taken different names and shapes over time, with the first really well-known product being MySpace, and now the most popular platforms are Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram, although there are others.
Each version of social media allowed, and allows, for a different iteration of communication to take place between individuals. For example, MySpace functioned sort of like a living yearbook, Facebook serves as the “everything platform” where individuals can post any type of media and use a messaging system to communicate, Twitter allows individuals to communicate with short messages of 160 characters or less known as “tweets”, and Instagram allows users to communicate by posting pictures that seek to give other users insight into what they like.
How to Use Social Media
In order to get involved with social media, the first step is to create an online account on the platform of your choice. If you are looking for broad, friendship-style connections or business promotions…Facebook is for you. If you prefer short, witty banter, Twitter is a good place to start. If you are a photographer, Instagram is the place to go. And if you are looking to hire new employees, LinkedIn is your destination.
How to Be Successful With Social Media
For businesses who are looking to increase sales, social media can be a great advertising platform. The business who are best at implementing social media advertising usually have accounts on all of the social media sites and update their post feeds regularly with new content.
However, you will want to have a lot of friends, followers, or “likes” on social media before you begin posting in order to build a web presence through which to promote your products. In order to do this, you can either go the organic route by allowing people to add you of their own natural desires, or you can pay to promote your posts, which will in turn guarantee new followers of your business.
Once this is done, you can begin promoting your products using different advertising campaigns, and you can follow the metrics of each campaign to measure which ones are the most successful. Since each social media platform attracts a different audience, you will want to learn how to target your market for each one of them and then advertise to that audience accordingly. If you can do all of this successfully, your business will flourish!
